The First Microprocessor Invention History

Because of its inherent programmability, the 4004 was developed for use in a calculator but proved to be helpful for a variety of other applications. For example, The 4004 was used in traffic light controls, blood analyzers, and the NASA Pioneer 10 deep-space mission. www.intel4004.com and www.4004.com provide further information about the iconic 4004 CPU.

The 8008 CPU has 3,500 transistors and was manufactured using the same 10-micron technique as the previous one. The 8008 was notable for having an 8-bit data bus, which allowed it to transport data 8 bits at a time, which was twice as much as the previous chip. It could also access up to 16KB of memory. Dumb terminals and general-purpose calculators mostly used this chip.

Intel released the 8008 CPU in April 1972, with a clock speed of 500 kHz at the time (0.5MHz). The 8080, which was released in April 1974, was the next chip in the range. The 8080 was created by Masatoshi Shima (a former Busicom engineer) under the guidance of Frederico Faggin. The 8080 processor had ten times the performance of the 8008. It ran at a clock rate of 2MHz. The 8080 chip was manufactured on a 6-micron process and has 6,000 transistors. The 8080, like the previous chip, had an 8-bit data bus, allowing it to send 8 bits of data at a time. The 8080 could access up to 64KB of memory, which was a huge improvement over the previous processor.
