When it comes to processor "widths," there is a common misunderstanding. Some people think of a width as the number of bits of data that can be read or written at once, while others think of it as the size of the internal registers that regulate how much data can be processed at once. Although many processors have similar data bus widths and internal register sizes, they are not necessarily the same, which can cause additional confusion. Most Pentium processors, for example, have 64-bit data buses but internal registers that are only 32 bits large.

Internal registers on AMD and Intel CPUs with the x86-64 architecture are 64 bits, and they can function in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes. As a result, there exist PC CPUs that can handle 16-bit, 32-bit, and 64-bit instructions from a software standpoint. Those with 64-bit registers can run 32-bit and 16-bit instructions, while those with 32-bit registers may run 16-bit instructions for backward compatibility. In any event, keep in mind that bus widths and register sizes have nothing to do with each other. It's worth noting that most contemporary CPUs employ serial buses, which are both small and fast.
