Microprocessor History

The processor—also known as a microprocessor or central processing unit—is the PC's brain or engine (CPU). The CPU is in control of calculating and processing the entire system. The CPU is one of the system's two most costly components (the other being the video card). The processor in higher-end computers might cost three times or more than the motherboard it connects into. With the launch of the 4004 chip in 1971, Intel is widely credited with developing the first microprocessor. Today, Intel continues to dominate the CPU industry, at least for PC systems, despite AMD's growing market share. For the most part, PC-compatible computers use Intel CPUs or AMD processors that are Intel-compatible.

It's important to note that the microprocessor had only been around for ten years previous to the invention of the PC! In 1971, Intel introduced the first microprocessor, while IBM introduced the personal computer in 1981. We're still utilizing systems that are based on the design of the original PC more than three decades later. In many ways, the processors that power our computers today are still backward compatible with the Intel 8088 that IBM chose for the original PC in 1981.
