The First Microprocessor Invention History

Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, both ex-Fairchild engineers, founded Intel on July 18, 1968 (as N M Electronics). They changed the company's name to Intel almost immediately, and co-founder Andrew Grove joined them. They set out to achieve a specific objective: to make semiconductor memory practical and inexpensive. This was not a certain conclusion at the time, given that silicon chip-based memory was at least 100 times more costly than magnetic core memory, which was widely utilized at the time. Semiconductor memory was around a dollar a bit at the time, whereas core memory was roughly a cent a bit. "All we had to do was cut the cost by a factor of a hundred," Noyce explained, "and we'd have the market, and that's basically what we accomplished."

By 1970, Intel had established itself as a successful memory chip manufacturer, has created a 1Kb memory chip that was far bigger than anything else on the market. A byte is equivalent to 8 bits, while a kilobyte is equal to 1,024 bits. As a result, this device could only hold 128 bytes, which isn't much by today's standards. By the end of the following year, it was known as the 1103 dynamic random access memory (DRAM), and it had become the world's best-selling semiconductor chip. Intel had expanded from the core founders and a few others to more than 100 people by this time.
