The First Microprocessor Invention History

Because of Intel's success in memory chip production and design, the Japanese company Business Computer Corporation (Busicom) invited the company to create a set of chips for a family of high-performance programmable calculators. Logic chips were custom-designed for each application or product at the time. Because most chips had to be custom-designed for a given purpose, no one chip could be used widely.

Busicom's original calculator design required at least 12 unique chips. Instead of the cumbersome idea, Intel engineer Ted Hoff presented a single-chip, general-purpose logic device that obtained its application instructions from semiconductor memory. A software could operate the processor and effectively adjust its function to the job at hand as the heart of a four-chip set that included read-only memory (ROM), random access memory (RAM), input/output (I/O), and the 4004 processor. Because the chip was generic, it could be used in designs other than calculators. Previous chip designs were hard-wired for a single function, with built-in instructions; this device would read a changeable set of instructions from memory, controlling the chip's operation. The goal was to create practically a whole computer system on a single chip that could perform a variety of functions based on the instructions it was given.
