The First Microprocessor Invention History

Based on Hoff's concept, Intel recruited Frederico Faggin to develop and build the 4004 logic in April 1970. Faggin arrived from Fairchild Semiconductor, where he invented the silicon gate technology that would prove crucial to successful microprocessor architecture, just like the Intel founders. Faggin received assistance from Masatoshi Shima, the Busicom engineer in charge of the calculator design, throughout the early logic design and layout phase. Shima continued to work for Faggin until October 1970, when he returned to Busicom. In January 1971, Faggin got the first completed batch of 4004 chips at closing time and worked alone until early the next morning testing the chip before exclaiming, "It works!" The 4000 chip family was completed and put into production by March 1971. It's worth noting that Faggin signed the processor die with his initials (F.F. ), a practice that was followed on by others in later chip designs.

The new chip had one flaw: Busicom held the intellectual property rights to it. Faggin realized that the device might be used in a wide range of situations, providing intelligence to a variety of "dumb" equipment. He pushed Intel to repurchase the product's rights. Although Intel co-founders Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce were excited about the new chip, others in the firm were afraid that it would divert attention away from the company's core goal: memory. The fact that every four-chip microcomputer set featured two memory chips eventually persuaded them. At the time, the company's director of marketing commented, "I suppose we regarded it as a method to sell more memories at first, and we were ready to invest on that assumption."
