PC Processor 16-Bit to 64-Bit Architecture Evolution

The transition from the 16-bit internal architecture of the 286 and previous processors to the 32-bit internal architecture of the 386 and newer chips, called IA-32 by Intel, was the first major shift in CPU architecture (Intel Architecture, 32-bit). Intel's 32-bit architecture was first introduced in 1985. It took ten years for both a partly 32-bit popular OS (Windows 95) and a complete 32-bit OS with 32-bit drivers (Windows NT) to appear, then another six years for the majority to migrate to a fully 32-bit OS and drivers environment (Windows XP). It took 16 years from the introduction of 32-bit computer hardware to the widespread adoption of 32-bit computing and related software. I'm sure you understand that in the world of technology, 16 years is a lifetime.

Intel, AMD, and Microsoft have nearly entirely migrated from 32-bit to 64-bit architectures, and we are nearing the end of another significant architectural revolution. Intel established the IA-64 (Intel Architecture, 64-bit) standard in 2001 with the Itanium and Itanium 2 CPUs, however, this was a wholly new standard, not a continuation of existing 32-bit technology. IA-64 was announced in 1994 as a joint Intel-HP CPU research effort (code-named Merced), with the first technical details released in October 1997.
