With the launch of the 386 CPU in the early 1990s, Intel began developing mobile versions of its processors. Almost all of Intel's and AMD's CPUs are available in mobile variants.
Although a mobile CPU may have the same code name and model number as its desktop equivalent and be based on the same fundamental design, it may have lower clock rates, smaller cache sizes, and different implementations of some functionalities. The Intel 486 CPU was the next to arrive in 1989. The 486 was the first computer with a built-in arithmetic coprocessor, with 1.2 million transistors. It was also the first Intel x86 processor to include both an instruction and data cache. It was 50 times quicker than the original 4004, with performance comparable to that of certain mainframe systems.
Then, in 1993, Intel introduced the Pentium, the first P5 family (586) processor, which set new performance standards by surpassing the previous 486 CPU by many times. The Pentium processor has 3.1 million transistors and could execute up to 90 MIPS—roughly 1,500 times faster than the 4004.
