Who Controls PC Software?
If you ask a question to most of the people in the world, They quickly respond "Microsoft". Now you can guess, what is the question. Ok, I clear this, The question is "Who controls PC software?". I don't know there is an argument with Microsoft with these types of people. Microsoft clearly controls the influential operating systems (OS) used on PCs, which have evolved from the original MS-DOS to DOS/Windows 3. x, then to Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT/2000/XP, and then Windows Vista/7, and at the end, Windows 8.1/10 and Windows 11 is a beta version. Even though cloud-based computing devices from Google (Chromebooks) competitor low-end Windows computers, Microsoft’s expansion into a tablet and mobile computing and its support for the latest imaging, Internet, graphics, I/O, and network standards continue to make Microsoft a leader in PC software standards.
Microsoft maintains and controls standard its influential position in the world of PC software, control over the PC OS market does not mean today what it means even some few years ago. Apple and Google, with iOS and Android, have created an absolutely new and profitable space for software in the mobile market where Microsoft finds itself playing catch up. As an increasing number of users day by day get by just fine without a traditional PC, it is interesting to watch that Microsoft adapt to a market over which it no longer has total control.
