White-Box Systems

Many of the top-selling system manufacturers, especially for their higher-end systems, design and manufacture their own motherboards. According to Gartner Research, Lenovo (previously IBM), HP, Dell, and Acer have continuously been the top PC manufacturers for the last many years. These companies both develop and build their own motherboards as well as buy pre-built boards from motherboard manufacturers. They may even design their own processors and chipset components for their own boards in exceptional situations. Although these companies' sales are high, a large portion of the market is made up of what are known as white-box systems in the industry. The term "white-box" is used in the industry to describe what are otherwise known as "generic PCs," or computers built from a collection of industry-standard, commercially accessible components. The name "white-box" refers to the fact that most of the chassis for this sort of system has been white in the past (or ivory or beige).

The benefit of white-box systems is that they use replaceable industry-standard components. This interchangeability is important to future upgrades and repairs since it ensures that a wide range of replacement components are available and interchangeable. For many years, I have advocated for the use of more industry-standard white-box solutions rather than proprietary ones.
