White-Box Systems

Manufacturing Companies that offer white-box systems normally don't build them; instead, they assemble them. That is, they buy commercially available motherboards, cases, power supplies, disk drives, peripherals, and other components, then build and sell them as full systems. Some companies, like HP and Dell, build their own systems and assemble others from industry-standard components. The HP Pavilion and Dell Dimension lines, for the instance, are mostly comprised of mainstream systems built with mostly industry-standard components. High-end game system builders such as Alienware use largely industry-standard hardware in their PCs (owned by Dell).

There are exceptions to all of these systems—many tiny form factor systems, for example, require proprietary elements like motherboards and PowerSupply. Because of potential upgrade and repair difficulties, as well as the high cost of proprietary replacement components, I recommend avoiding such systems.

Acer, CyberPower, Micro Express, and Systemax are among the companies that use industry-standard components, but there are hundreds more. In terms of overall volume, this is the largest section of the PC market today. What's cool about white-box systems is that, with a few exceptions, we can buy the same motherboards and other components that any of the white-box manufacturers can (Although, due to the volume savings they obtain, we would definitely pay more than they do). We can build a nearly equivalent white-box system from the ground up.
