PC System Types

There are many different types of computers. I prefer to divide them into two categories: the design or width of the processor bus (often referred to as the front-side bus [FSB]) and the width of the internal registers, which determines the sort of software that may be executed.

When a processor reads data, the data passes through the processor's external data link and into the CPU. This connection has traditionally been a parallel bus; but, in recent circuits, it is a serialized point-to-point link that transfers fewer bits at a faster pace. In older systems, the bus was typically shared by numerous components, but current point-to-point communications are just between the processor and the chipset.

All Intel and AMD x86 and x86-64 CPUs, as well as their data bus widths and internal register sizes, are included in the table below.

Intel and AMD x86 and x86-64 Processors and Their Data Bus/Register Widths

Processor Data Bus WidthRegister Size
8088 8-bit 16-bit
8086 16-bit 16-bit
286 16-bit 16-bit
386SX 16-bit 32-bit
386DX/486/5x86 32-bit 32-bit
Intel/AMD x86 w/FSB 64-bit 32-bit
AMD x86 w/HyperTransport 16-bit 32-bit
AMD x86-64 w/HyperTransport 16-bit 64-bit
Intel x86-64 w/FSB 64-bit 64-bit
Intel x86-64 w/QPI 20-bit 64-bit
