PC Processor Invention Evolution

The third-generation Core i-series CPUs (Ivy Bridge) and Panther Point chipsets were launched by Intel in 2012. Ivy Bridge is the first Intel CPU to use the 22nm manufacturing, and it uses the mentioned 3D Tri-Gate transistor technology that Intel invented in 2011. Integrated USB 3.0 and PCI Express 3.0 capabilities are additional notable improvements. AMD has introduced the second generation of FX-83xx, FX63xx, and FX-43xx Socket AM3+ CPUs. These are based on the company's modular Piledriver architecture, which is a more efficient version of Bulldozer, and "Trinity" APUs (improved versions of its original desktop APUs also using Piledriver architecture). The chipsets for these new CPUs from AMD have USB 3.0 capability as well. In 2012, Microsoft released Windows RT, a tablet-optimized version of Windows that runs on RISC-based ARM processors. Many firms build ARM processors under license, and they are also utilized in non-Windows tablets and smartphones.

The fourth-generation Core i-series (Haswell) processors were launched in 2013, and they have processor-integrated voltage regulators, new AVX 2.0 instructions, a second branch-prediction unit, and more arithmetic and address-generation units. The FX 9xxx series of AMD's Vishera Piledriver-based CPUs were introduced, with clock speeds exceeding 4.4GHz and water cooling advised. AMD also unveiled their Richland APUs, which are more energy-efficient, as well as Socket FM2.

Intel's fourth-generation high-performance Core i-series CPUs, codenamed "Devil's Canyon," was introduced in 2014. These are Haswell-based processors, however, the Core i7 variant is the first Intel CPU to run at a 4GHz base clock speed. Intel also released LGA2011v3, an updated version of LGA2011, Core i7 processors in its Haswell E (also known as Haswell refresh) family, as well as a 20th anniversary Pentium processor with unlocked cores for easier multitasking. AMD produced its first "Steamroller" architecture APUs in the same year (Kaveri).
