Comparing Processor Performance

The various speed ratings of CPUs are a typical source of confusion. This section discusses CPU speed in general before going more into Intel, AMD, and VIA/Cyrix processors.

The clock speed of a computer system is expressed as a frequency, which is commonly given in cycles per second. A crystal oscillator uses a sliver of quartz, which is sometimes enclosed in a tiny tin container, to adjust clock speeds. Because the oscillator circuitry is integrated into the motherboard chipset in modern systems, it may not be seen as a distinct component on newer boards. When a voltage is applied to quartz, it begins to vibrate (oscillate) at a periodic rate determined by the crystal's form and size (sliver). The oscillations are emitted by the crystal as a current that alternates at the crystal's harmonic rate. This alternating current is the clock signal, which serves as the computer's time foundation. The speed of a typical computer system is measured in megahertz or gigahertz since it operates millions or billions of these cycles each second. A hertz is a measuring unit that represents one cycle per second. The frequency of an alternating current signal is determined by the duration between the peaks of each wave.
