Internal Data Bus Microprocessor (Internal Registers)

The size of the internal registers determines how much data the processor can handle at once and how data is moved around inside the device. The internal data bus is a term that is sometimes used to refer to this device. A register is a storage cell within the processor; for example, the processor can add two separate registers and store the result in a third register. The register size defines the maximum amount of data that the processor can handle. A chip's register size also indicates the type of software, or orders and instructions, that it can execute. That example, processors with 32-bit internal registers can execute 32-bit instructions that process 32-bit data chunks, whereas processors with 16-bit registers can't. From the 386 to the Pentium 4, processors have 32-bit internal registers and can run the same 32-bit operating systems and software. Internal registers on the Core 2, Athlon 64, and subsequent CPUs are 32-bit and 64-bit, allowing them to run both 32-bit and 64-bit OSs and apps.
