With its popular Z87 series, ASUS is going for gold... literally. ASUS has abandoned its long-standing blue-ish color scheme for its standard line in favor of a gold-colored one, as we reported prior to the official Z87 chipset introduction. What is the explanation behind this? Gold, on the other hand, signifies an extremely high quality, which ASUS feels this lineup satisfies.

ASUS' current-gen motherboard lineup is, as usual, a bit overwhelming, and I'm sure we'll be looking at some of the non-mainstream variants in the future. What exactly do I mean when I say "mainstream"? That's how ASUS refers to a product line that has something for everyone. This is in contrast to its more focused series, such as Republic of Gamers, WS (workstation), or Sabertooth (stable, long-lasting). If you're only wanting to create a Z87-based PC, you can't go wrong with a mainstream series board.

The EXPERT board is closer to the top of the Z87 mainstream lineup than the bottom, with a wealth of connection choices, including Thunderbolt. As we'll see shortly, the connection adds a reasonable price premium to the board, so if you don't care about it, the similar Z87-PRO is the next best thing.
