Intel and AMD both have six-core CPUs with L1, L2, and L3 cache.

The third level of cache known as L3 cache is found in most late-model mid-range and high-performance CPUs. The L3 cache was once uncommon in multicore CPUs, but it is becoming increasingly popular in newer and faster multicore processors like the Intel Core i7 and AMD Phenom II and FX processors.

Using the same restaurant example I used to explain L1 and L2 caches, I'll compare the L3 cache to a second cart with more food items put next to the L2 cache cart in the restaurant. If the appropriate food item was not on the table (L1 cache miss) or on the first food cart (L2 cache miss), the waiter might reach over to the second food cart and retrieve it (See few previous posts for example of the restaurant).

In multicore CPUs, where the L3 cache is often shared across all cores, the L3 cache is very useful. Because of the advantages of multicore diagram architectures, both Intel and AMD employ L3 cache in most of their current CPUs. The cache types and sizes in the Intel Core i5 2500 Sandy Bridge and AMD Phenom II X6 1055T, as reported by CPU-Z, are shown below.

Both CPU Z program windows have the CPU tab selected. For easier comparison, the Name field in the Processor segment, the data fields in the Cache segment, and the data fields Cores and Threads are pointed and labeled. The following is a list of Intel core i5 cache information: Each of the L1 data cache and instruction cache fields reads 4 times 32 Kbytes and 8 ways. Level 2 reads 4 times 256 Kbytes in an 8-way format, whereas Level 3 reads 6 Mbytes in a 12-way format. The following is a list of AMD Phenom cache information: L1 Data and L1 Instructions are read in two directions six times 64 Kbytes each. Level 2 is a 16-way read that reads 6 times 512 Kbytes. Level 3 reads 6 megabytes in 48 directions.
