How to work Motherboard Cache

In general, It only needs to look at one unique tag address for each memory location, a direct-mapped cache is the fastest at identifying and retrieving data from the cache. However, it has a higher rate of misses than the other designs. Because it has so many more address tags to sift through, a fully associative cache has the highest hit percentage but is the slowest at locating and retrieving data. An n-way set associative cache strikes a balance between cache performance and hit ratio, however, the higher the associativity, the more hardware (tag bits, comparator circuits, and so on) is required, increasing the cache's cost. Cache design is, of course, a series of trade-offs, and what works best in one case may not work best in another. Multitasking environments like Windows are ideal examples of situations where the CPU must work on many sections of memory at the same time and where an n-way cache might help.

To guarantee that the processor is working with current data, the contents of the cache must always be in sync with the contents of the main memory. As a result, the 486 families' internal cache was a write-through cache. The term "write-through" refers to the fact that when the processor writes data to the cache, it is also written to the main memory. Pentium and later processors, on the other hand, feature an inbuilt write-back cache, which caches both readings and writes, further enhancing speed.

Improved cache designs also have the advantage of being nonblocking. By using the overlap of CPU activities with data accesses, this strategy may be used to reduce or hide memory latency. As long as certain dependence requirements are followed, a non-blocking cache allows program execution to run at the same time with cache misses. In other words, the cache is much better at handling cache misses, allowing the processor to continue working on anything unrelated to the missing data.
