In a high-pressure, high-temperature oven, a pure silicon ingot is grown.

A tiny seed crystal is put into the molten silicon and slowly rotated after it has been melted. Some of the liquid silicone adheres to the seed and hardens in the same crystal structure as the seed as it is taken out of the molten silicon. The crystal grows with a small neck that spreads into the entire needed diameter once the pulling speed (10–40 millimeters per hour) and temperature (about 2,500°F) are properly managed. Each ingot is 200mm (about 8 inches) or 300mm (12 inches) in diameter and more than 5 feet long, weighing hundreds of pounds, depending on the chips being manufactured.

A cutaway view of an oven is seen in the image above. The silicon seed is seen above the single silicon crystal at the top of the oven. The heat shield layer is positioned within the water-cooled chamber, which is the outermost layer. The carbon heater is protected by a heat shield layer. A graphite crucible is put within the carbon heater with the aid of crucible support. A spill tray and an electrode are put at the bottom of the oven.

The ingot is then machined into a perfect 200mm (8 inches) or 300mm (12 inches) diameter cylinder with a tiny flat or notch cut on one side for handling and placing. Each ingot is then split into over a thousand round wafers, each less than a millimeter thick, using a high-precision saw. To prepare the wafers for imprinting, they are polished to a mirror-smooth surface.
