Welcome to the Asus Maximus V Formula motherboard review. This motherboard is one of the Z77 ROG series motherboards from Asus. If you're acquainted with the acronym ROG, it stands for the Republic of Gamers. You have a lot of space on your board. I'm not sure if you remember, but a few generations back, we saw 24-phase motherboards, which is kind of crazy, but the quality of the phases and the materials. This feature is cool because you're employing cooling as well. Asus has just released the first and legitimate water-cooled motherboard with its fusion of turbo architecture. Water-cooled boards have been observed in the past. Still, there is generally some fatal fault, such as only being compatible with a quarter-inch tube or having an aluminum element to the design that will cause it to corrode. The fusions thermal VRM cooler here works perfectly as an air cooler, but it also features a heat pipe to facilitate heat transmission and a water channel connected to three-eighths inch Barb's. The Thermo is entirely made of copper and nickel.
I've seen a liquid-cooled VRM on a motherboard, but the features don't stop at the top left of the board. It will operate similarly to if you hooked it up to your water cooling system, but it will also perform well on air, which is the optimal application. Stepping down from 1/2 inch to 3/8 inch has no detrimental impact on performance, and it looks a little nicer; plus, it's easier to route the tubing if you choose a thick wall of 3/8 inch. If you use this board on a test bench, which I frequently recommend for high-speed memory, this redline memory isn't particularly fast but looks wonderful. This board's layout is ideal, as we've stated. So it powers up precisely where it goes at the upper left and down the right-hand edge. Your front USB 3 is precisely where it should be, and as we move down towards the bottom of the board, you can see we've got a glowing ROG logo and the great PCI Express slot that I said for things like Asus triple flawed Direct view YouTube cards. At the bottom of the motherboard, we got a header for the thunderbolt in a card that Asus has, and probably one of the biggest features of this board is the onboard audio. So you can see that red line that separates the board into almost two completely separate PCBs. What's unique about that is that ACC uses that red line and has a physical separation that line exists through its LED lighting on a clear segment of the board. This feature reduces the interference on onboard audio, given their experience with audio solutions.
They've done some very high-end work recently. Asus has made some modifications in the previous several months that will be pretty successful. So, for starters, they've added a 1500 microfarad super cap, which provides the onboard audio, which can't be called onboard audio at this point since it's more like discrete, as much power as it needs while you're moving extremely quietly. It's a two-pronged explosion, and there is no delay in the response of the music since it always has enough power. It also uses audio capacitors Elma audio capacitors. Those might be better caps regarding voltage response or how they handle high temperatures. But what they do is they give a more distinctive sound that most audio applications will prefer to something like a high-performance VRM cap. The last thing they've done is adding a 311th which means you can run pretty much any headphones you want off your onboard audio without suffering from any performance degradation due to your high-end headphones. The Thunder FX version is optional, and you pay a little more for it. However, it's an outstanding value, so if you guys saw my videos about the essence, think of this as a cut-down version of the essence one.
The Maximus V Formula features excellent onboard audio, but you get something greater. You are no longer required. It may appear to be an odd package. Oh, we created this motherboard with excellent internal audio, and we've included an excellent external USB sound card to go with it. But it makes far more logical than you would believe. The Thunderer FX module is compatible with your PC, your Microsoft Xbox, PlayStation 3, and any other device that produces an analog signal. It also includes the necessary auxiliary wires to get it up and running. So, on the rear, there's a USB that powers the device and left and right analog audio ports.
Now the front is very straightforward. So you've got your modes PC Xbox 360 and PS3, and then you've also got the volume control. Your headphones are in the microphone, which is the most remarkable thing. You've got an active noise-canceling microphone port on here. So, if you're using a headset with noise canceling, you will have noise cancellation for the noise around. If you're using one of these, you got it sitting on your desk in front of you; say, in a noisy land environment, this microphone port here will pick up the ambient noise around you. It will isolate your voice away from it because it'll know from that microphone import what you're saying into the mic, and it'll take that and go. That's the loud stuff. That's what's essential separate that voice out and then collect that ambient noise, filter it away so that you'll always have the clearest possible broadcast to your fellow gamers. The conclusion of this review is pretty straightforward. You'll even be able to take the Thunder FX module forward with you to your next PC, and then whoever gets your old board can enjoy the great onboard audio, and you can continue to enjoy the even better Thunder FX audio.
