With a sizable lineup of Republic Of Gamers (R.O.G.) models, Asus has established itself as a major competitor in the high-end gaming motherboard market. The Maximus V Extreme, their flagship Z77 motherboard, is with us today. This highly high-end motherboard is built for enthusiasts, particularly those who indulge in competitive overclocking and is jam-packed to the gills with features.
Design and Layout
The motherboard came in a carefully wrapped box with the board and its components inside. The Maximus V uses Intel's Z77 chipset and is an entire ATX motherboard. This indicates that you have Socket 1155, suitable for the latest Ivy Bridge and the older Sandy Bridge CPUs. With a black PCB and a combination of black and red heatsinks and expansion ports, the board's look is quite eye-catching. Debug LEDs for the GPUs, RAM, BIOS and other components are widely dispersed over the board.
The backport cluster includes a LAN jack, S/PDIF in and out, audio jacks, a clear CMOS button, a ROG Connect button, a PS2 keyboard, and mouse combo port, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, HDMI, 4x USB 3.0 ports, 4x USB 2.0 ports, a LAN jack, and a few additional ports. The latter is used to turn on and off the OC Key gadget that is supplied. In addition to these connections, there are several headers for four additional USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, three SATA II and six SATA III connectors, six 4-pin fan headers, a BIOS switch button, power, and reset buttons.
VGA Hotwire connections from Asus have also been added, enabling you to overvolt your graphics card directly. There are four RAM Dimm slots up to 32GB. The Maximus V supports XMP profiles and up to 2800MHz RAM, allowing you to push your system to its absolute maximum. Along with LucidLogix Virtu MVP Technology, the board supports CrossFireX and 4-way SLI multi-GPU configurations.
There are five PCIe 3.0 x16 slots available in total. If just one card is used, the overall bandwidth is x16; otherwise, the speed is x8/x8, x8/x16/x8, and x8/x16/x8/x8 for two, three, and four cards, respectively. Additionally, we have one mini-PCIe 2.0 slot and one x4 PCIe 2.0 slot. A dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card with two external antennae that can be put on your desk for improved reception are handy extras that Asus has included.
The RAM slots and expansion slots have a decent arrangement. Large heatsinks have plenty of areas to fit around the CPU, but because the MOSFETS and VRMs also have extra heatsinks, attaching them could be challenging. Swapping out the RAM is simple, even with a big graphics card attached, thanks to the RAM slots' single-sided fastening clips. Large GPUs are not a problem because all SATA ports point outside.

Key Features
The OC Key is one of this motherboard's best features. It's pretty easy to set up, and we got the chance to witness it in action back in October when Asus hosted their X79 showcase in Singapore. The ROG Connect button on the back panel activates the OC Key, which bridges your display and the GPU. Once turned on, you may view readouts of the CPU's current voltage, temperature, and other information over whatever is displayed on your monitor. You can even directly overclock these settings through the OSD itself. The ROG Connect button allows you to switch between using your keyboard to input data into Windows and the overlay interface. This gives you real-time information on your CPU and operates quite well. It's also incredibly simple to set up. The overlay's accessibility from any screen, including while Windows is starting, is another plus.
Some unique features from Asus have been incorporated, such as VGA Hotwire, which enables you to experiment directly with the voltages of your graphics card without the need for any software. This motherboard's OC Key may also be used to keep an eye on this. When utilizing liquid nitrogen, the board also contains a Subzero Sense feature that allows you to monitor the temperature. This feature can read temperatures as low as -195 degrees Celsius. Additionally, you receive the Extreme Engine Digi+ II technology, which comes with Japanese Black Metallic capacitors and a complete digital power system. When overclocking with this digital technology, you may make small tweaks, making the system more reliable. The UEFI dual-BIOS system also offers a beautiful graphical interface for configuring settings.
