Asus Maximus VII GENE Motherboard Overview

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Asus Maximus VII GENE motherboard. This motherboard is, of course, from the Republic of gamers line. The Asus Maximus VII GENE motherboard is a smaller form factor of micro ATX and uses a new Intel Z97 chipset. So it's going to work in conjunction with Intel's 4770k.

Accessories

Now we are going to jump in and have a good look at the packaging. Could you have a look at the motherboard itself? We've got a red box with similar typography, but the supporting features run along the bottom. Support there for Intel's fourth and fifth generation of CPUs. The fifth generation is supposed to be coming later. Intel's Z97 chipset SLI crossfire supports 4k. If you are running off the onboard graphics at the outputs are there, we'll give you 4k, so that's nice windows 8.1 ready. So that's good, and as usual, the lid opens out to reveal some of the fundamental features. It's all presented very clearly, taking the box and hooking it over. We've got the technical specifications. A full listing there gives you such details as memory compatibility. While delving inside the box, we first meet the motherboard itself being this out. We've got this plastic tray lid that gives you a preview of what you get inside. Please look at that later, and inside here, we've got the bundled accessories. We've got a combination of six SATA-3 6g cables.

We have these supreme FX audio modules, the door hunger, stickers for hard drives, and useful things if you've got many drives. It's useful to identify which I've got a cushioned and a black rear I/O shield. You have the Nvidia SLI bridge, a flexible one Quick Connect allows you to get your computer case cables plugged in easily; that's a nice feature. We've got, of course, the driver CD, all the software, a case badge inside there, and then we've got the user manual which details everything you need to know if you encounter any problems. So it would help if you referred to those very extensive and useful. Now, we're going to take a look at the board itself. It is a shiny black PCB we've seen in previous generations, and they've opted for a smooth matte black finish and the combination of black and red used throughout the motherboard. The design looks stunning and likely to pair up with different hardware very well, and from an initial look, you can appreciate how many features have been crammed into this micro ATX form factor.

Motherboard Analysis

We will now look at every feature on the board in detail. The CPU socket is LGA 1150, which allows you to install the fourth generation of CPU, and it will have support for the upcoming fifth generation. In the socket, we have two large heat sinks covering the MOSFETs, and a copper heat pipe interconnects both heat sinks. There is an 8 + 2 phase power design via extreme engine digi+ free. The power delivery is all digital, and some significant components are used throughout the motherboard. We've got the next FET power block, MOSFETs 60 amp ferrite chokes, and 10k black metallic capacitors, and just behind the heat sinks, there is an eight-pin EPS CPU power socket. We also have dual CPU fan headers, which are now becoming customary for mobile design, turning our attention to the memory. We have four DIMM slots paving the way for dual channel DDR3 supports and can accommodate up to 32 gigabytes of memory and up to 3,300 megahertz. In this region, we have a Pro belt that allows you to use your multimeter to accurately monitor the voltages compared to software, which can sometimes check out incorrect readings. Led debug is there on the motherboard, too, allowing you to diagnose any problematic boot-up.

We've also got the MemOk button which ensures a fail-safe boot for incompatible memory and then just next to the 24-pin power connector. We've got a single USB-free header for connectivity at the front of the use case. One of the most surprising aspects of the Asus Maximus VII Gene is the storage options, although the motherboard is Micro-Atx. There are up to eight SATA-free 6g ports and an M.2 slot. Next to the PCI Express slots and they can accommodate type 20 to 60 and 20 to 80 SSDs. Next up, we have the PCI Express slots, which comprise just two PCI Express 3.0X, which will operate at X8. If you're going to be using them simultaneously with Nvidia SLI or AMD crossfire, but if you're using a single card configuration, then it's best to use that top slot as that will run at X16. Now additionally, we've got a single PCI Express 2.0 X4 that can be used for multimedia devices; at the bottom of the board, you'll notice that we've got those onboard power and reset buttons. They're ideal if you're going to be using a test bench. We've also got the keyboards and the soundstage buttons. We saw both of those on the Ranger.

The key bar allows you to apply macros and functions to a standard USB keyboard. All you have to do is plug in the USB keyboard and activate the keyboard by pressing that button, and then with the provided software, you can begin assigning commands. Then we sound stage. This works alongside supreme effects, allowing you to switch between different audio profiles on the fly and just before we round things off as part of the rear I/O panel. We have a mini PCI Express slot, Rog connect to and clear CMOS button, a PS2 keyboard, a mouse with two USB to ports optical S/pdif out, and an HDMI port. The HDMI port gives you up to 4k resolution. A Gigabit LAN port has two USB3 ports and 2 USB2 and 2 USB3 ports. In addition, we have a set of pins that work in conjunction with the supplied supreme effects module. This plugs directly into the motherboard, allowing you to take full advantage of the supreme FX feature set. So that, in a nutshell, is the new Asus Maximus 7 Gene. We have some ROG features that need to be included in the furnace. It includes more than you would expect in such a condensed workspace. You know the ROG engineers have done an excellent job designing this layout and deciding where specific features will be placed.
